Violence breeds violence

Research from around the world suggests that people who deliberately harm animals are more likely to harm people, too. Many infamous killers, including Mary Bell, Ian Brady and Dunblane murderer Thomas Hamilton, started out by deliberately hurting animals. But it's not just high profile killers whose violence can be traced back to 'practise runs' on animals; perpetrators of domestic violence and other assaults may also have begun by inflicting pain on animals

More of my observations and thoughts.

At the time of your death.

It’s a fact that when you are on your death bed you are more likely to regret the things you have not done than the things you have done.

The States of Jersey is the largest property owner with a £1 bn-plus portfolio and many of these properties are lying in ruin with no rolling maintenance program. This includes  properties gifted to them with the hope they would be used for the benefit of the Island. Yet they still build on green field sites and they still keep building new offices for themselves for millions of pounds then facing a dilemma with what to do with the old buildings. A good example of this is the beautiful Jersey Ladies College which we were told was about to fall down and the new school had to be built. Now we find the old building is suitable for renovation and to be turned into town houses and flats on this huge site, a site that was an ideal setting for a college unlike the new building.

Twenty five years ago the beautiful centuries old irreplaceable FCJ Convent in Val Plaisant was demolished and a huge concrete slabbed high rise block of flats was built, we are now told this building is falling apart and has to be demolished and low rise like the old convent should be built.

When visitors ask where the old part of town is we are unable to answer because it has been demolished and put in the reclamation site in beautiful St Aubin’s Bay.

When in St Helier you rarely see any police presence, apparently there are police cars that drive around and many surveillance cameras . There has been problems around the island and not long ago in St Brelade youths had been stoning cars, taxis and buses smashing their windows as they drive along the main road at Quennevais. Thank goodness this is better now. The police we are told cannot do anything if they catch these youths as all the youth detention centres are full to over flowing and they can only confine them to their parent or parents. How strange it is that if a couple own a dog and that dog is unruly and not trained then bites someone or causes damage then they are held totally responsible by the law. Yet that same couple can bring up their children with no discipline or morals and the tax payer is responsible!

Oil wells around earth could be affecting the earths structure.

If we think of our earth as a living organism with the oil acting as the fluid beneath the earth’s crust to keep it stable under the great gravitational pressure exerted. The crust of the earth is moving all the time very slowly and expanding, hence the continents are drifting apart and the Pro Atyrau Institute of Oil and Gas, an independent geological school, believes that exploiting a oil field in a known seismic zone could trigger a massive earthquake.  They say "Releasing oil at 1,000 atmosphere pressure is like releasing a genie in a bottle. Who knows what will happen?

The pressure in certain oil wells sharply rose about a month before the Tangshan earthquake and earthquakes can be predicted in this way now but not their exact location.

A familiar oil-well image is an uncontrolled "gusher" spewing oil high into the sky to rain down on the joyous drillers. Oil gushes because it is under pressure in the ground.

In a reservoir, oil and water fill the open pores between the grains of the reservoir rock, much as a drink fills the spaces between ice cubes in a glass. The weight of all the rock on top of a reservoir applies pressure on the reservoir rock, as well as on the oil, water, and gas within it. When a well penetrates a reservoir, the pressure in the reservoir drives the oil and gas toward the lower pressure of the open well. As the oil or gas is withdrawn, reservoir pressure falls as the volume of oil between the grains of the reservoir rock is reduced. Somewhat like a balloon whose neck is opened, the reservoir gradually "deflates." In some very large oil fields, this deflation has actually caused the land surface to subside. In some areas of Long Beach, California, for example, subsidence due to oil withdrawal exceeds 10 feet.

Is this not a good reason to move away from fossil fuel and promote sun, wind and water as our renewable energy source for the future or are we learning nothing as we blindly destroy our world.

What is time, is it important, does it really exist?

With touch, smell, sight, hearing etc there is something real to prove they exist but not so with time. With touch you can feel something even air on a wet finger, with smell the odour disperses in the air, with sight the visible light enters the eye and can be interpreted by the brain, with hearing the sound waves through the air or water gradually level out till they disappear, I know time is not a sense, but what is time?

During the day the sun rises and sets at regular periods as the earth rotates and this is used as a time scale but if you fall asleep and wake after a long period you have no idea how long you have slept. If a person falls into a comma and wakes years later he has no concept as to the time that has past. Time is infinite whether thinking back to 200,000,000 approximate years ago when New Zealand was formed or to the unknown distant lights years away to reach the limits of our galaxy.

If there is life after death as the gospels tell us then it is possible that if our consciousness awakens again all at the same time on judgement day then none of us would have any idea how long we had been dead which could make it possible to happen.

You go to bed and sleep tonight and when you wake after ten hours or six hours it is impossible to tell how long you have slept.

So don’t worry about how old you are, it does not matter, it means nothing as long as you look after yourself and try to age gracefully.

When I was very young I used to wonder what the year 2000 would be like as it was so far away and if I would still be here. In what seems a very short spell I am here in the twenty first century and all those past years are just memories.

As you finish this sentence ‘now’ that’s the past and the next word is the future there fore the infinitesimal moment between is all that matters to us and called the present.

And it’s what you do in the present that depicts your whole life and history, so remember to be kind, gentle etc as you cannot change the past but you can influence your future.

The past is not a long way back and the future is not far in the distant, it’s just a spilt second between. Time is irrelevant to our life and it’s the present that’s important.

The States of Jersey Tourism’s Blue flag walks are brilliant, not only for tourists but also locals. We have been on quite a few  including the four day cross Island walk with Remi Couriard who I must say is not only very knowledgeable but also makes it very entertaining and I thoroughly recommend it.

One thing I must say is that none of the Blue flag guides knew and were not taught as part of their course about the stamp that every real Channel Islander has to compulsory have in their passports restricting their living or working in the rest of Europe. However they did know that all twelve parish churches were originally Roman Catholic and taken over by Henry V111 at the time of the reformation. They were smashed up during the Protestant era and all the stain glass windows destroyed, the last remaining remnants of the original glass can be found in the small window above the west door in St Lawrence parish church. This is one reason why the Catholics in the parishes don’t object to compulsory having to pay the upkeep of all the twelve parish churches although some are not happy to also pay all the costs towards the housing, heating, welfare etc. of the Church of England vicars when their own parish Priests, churches and graveyards rely only on their congregations support.

All top jobs in the States of Jersey usually go to UK entrants. Home Affairs chief officer said that choosing someone from outside the Island was in line with a States wide policy for departmental heads,  ‘Since ministerial government, all top jobs in the public sector are advertised outside the Island as well as within, and we cannot give preference to a candidate just because he is local,’ he said. ‘The only exception would be if two candidates were equal in skills and experience  which is extremely rare. In that case the local factor might be taken into consideration”.

What hope does a local person have, with the huge UK dominated Civil Service who do the interviews and appointments, the Jersey born candidates must be disadvantaged and ex graduates trying to return really find it very difficult.

( I also know of people being told to apply for certain posts.)

Studies show that importing people does not improve the average wealth of the population, although it adds to the income of the wealthy. This has been true whenever a sizeable number of people relocate, such as the sugar cane workers in Fiji, the slave trade and even the convict colonies.
Burgeoning populations always reduce the quality of life. The pressure on the natural environment becomes unsupportable; water quality decreases, air pollution increases, access to cultural centres is reduced, government costs increase, social and material infrastructure cracks, cities become unmanageable, and our personal space is reduced to the thickness of the clothes we wear.

It is naive to say we need more people so they can support the aging population. Who will support the newcomers? Another tidal wave of immigrants? And so on ad infinitum.

If higher populations bring prosperity and a superior life- style, then why is there not a single example to be found on this planet? There is no nation, anywhere that needs more people. Indeed we all need far fewer.

I believe before taking a examination to drive a car everybody should be made to ride a motorcycle or scooter for a set time or even ride a bicycle in traffic. This would definitely improve the standard of  driving in Jersey. You will find that the majority of car drivers would be to terrified and incapable of riding a motorized two wheeled vehicle around St Helier or even Jersey’s country roads.

Makes you learn about road conditions, concentration and to anticipate everything, because you have to and these are invaluable skills you keep for the rest of your life.

It would certainly open their eyes if they did.

To the general public our Ministerial  Government seems to consist of highly paid people who cannot make decisions on their own or as a group, are not guided by their Civil servants who themselves spent most of their time selecting UK company's to make reports for them at great expense. These reports are usually always deemed as a waste of public money and then shelved.

I realize this goes on all over the world but in our small island it seems closer to our hearts and that’s why it is so disappointing.

Some people are in denial over climate change and cannot see traffic fumes as doing any harm to ourselves or the environment . If only it was possible to harmlessly colour the exhaust fumes from the vehicles in St Helier ( or any capital city) for just one day, say pink or green, to show how it spreads and what we are breathing then maybe then they would realise. I guarantee there would be an uproar.

The internal combustion engine operates on the same principle as us humans, it breaths in good air and exhausts bad air. On this earth there are well over a billion internal combustion engines and not so long ago whilst walking around Seoul in Korea in the haze of traffic fumes and the millions of cars this really brought it home to me that this has to be bad for mankind. Air quality is now rated as one of the biggest killers for all of us on this lovely blue planet earth.

You can choose your friends but you cannot choose your parents. The first five years of your children's lives are the most important where you directly affect their personalities for the rest of their lives. Make sure you give your children the best upbringing you can, they are your responsibility and most of all they rely on you.

The beautiful granite FCJ Convent that was in Val Plaisant. Sadly being demolished below.

There was a time when our people covered the land, but that time long since passed away with the greatness of tribes that are now but a mournful memory. I will not dwell on, nor mourn over, our untimely decay, nor reproach my paleface brothers with hastening it as we too may have been somewhat to blame.

Text Box: The Channel Islands are situated within in the 25 mile exclusion zone of the French Nuclear power station the largest in Europe from which Jersey Electricity Company buys it’s power.
Text Box: Jersey has the highest diagnosis of cancer per area than anywhere else in Great Britain and Europe.
Is it the nuclear power station or the radon gas emanating from the granite I wonder?
Text Box: Jersey’s government is stagnating here in the 21st Century I feel shown by a third of the 2014 election seats actually being unopposed. Such a pity but with a diverse immigrant population there is no passion any more.
Less than 5000 true Jersey persons left in Jersey. Check your Jersey passports for the stamp.

Jersey could have led the world if a few decades ago it had decided to go completely organic, use only sea, wind and sun power, saved our heritage and only allowed electric vehicles on our tiny island.

Hindsight is wonderful.

Money corrupts.

NO one can argue with Selina Scott seeking £1 million damages for age discrimination towards the end of her glittering career. Providing, of course, that she can show she did not benefit unfairly from being young and beautiful at the start of her glittering career.

Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

Contradictory views from the JEP on the restriction imposed in the Jersey passports of the 5000 real Jersey people. .

Lawfully.

I personally have been refused both work and residency in Belgium because of this stamp. Jersey people with this stamp in their passports are knowingly breaking the law if they work in the EU and whether the authorities / employers are diligent or not in their checks of new staff is irrelevant.

Nellie M.

Unlawfully.

I am sick and tired of saying that I have the stamp in my passport but I have lived and worked In Amsterdam and Spain with the knowledge and approval of the authorities. I even pointed out the stamp to the authorities In Amsterdam who laughed at It. Jersey Is a small place and as long as you have a British passport no one will take any notice of this stamp.

(Love to know this persons views on illegal immigrants in their country)

Keep this in mind the next time you are about to repeat a rumour.

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom.
One day, an acquaintance ran up to him excitedly and said, 'Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?
Wait a moment,' Socrates replied, 'Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test.’ ‘Triple filter?' asked the acquaintance.’ That’s right,' Socrates continued. 'Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to filter what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth.

Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true? “No”, the man said, 'actually I just heard about it '
All right,' said Socrates. 'So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?’ ‘No, on the contrary ....''So,' Socrates continued, 'you want to tell me something bad about him, even
though you're not certain it's true?'.
The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued.' You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me? ‘No, not really...'
'Well,' concluded Socrates, 'if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all? The man was defeated and ashamed.

This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

It also explains why Socrates never found out that Plato was shagging his missus.

Sometimes with certain people it’s better to agree than to tell the truth

The term “Climate change” should be used instead of “Global warming” as man’s activities are not just affecting a climb in temperature but extremes in temperature. i.e. warmer wetter summers and colder dryer winters.

Some people laugh at the extremely cold winter and say “where is Global warming now”

Ignorance is bliss

A committee is a group of people that keep minutes and waste hours

Most of man’s inventions have been time-savers, then came television

When percentage pay rise awards came about people did not realize the impact it could have. It actually increases the difference and widens the gap between the rich and the poor. The same per cent increase on £100,000 compared to a worker on £20,000 year on year is ridiculous and immoral.  In my younger days we were awarded hourly increases depending on your abilities and skills with sometimes the blue collar workers receiving a larger amount than the white collar workers keeping us on a fairer level. Think about it!

Listening to the radio phone in on Radio Jersey ( now ceased by new management ) you seem to be invariably restricted because there always seems to be an enquiry going on or data protection and the people are unable to express themselves as they are prevented from speaking. Whereas on NewstalkZB in New Zealand you are able to express your views  about all the current news and scandals quite freely as they are reported, which is very educating and entertaining.

Easter 2011 the vehicle pollution in London is as bad as the far east cities that we know of, yet nothing gets done. Where are these promised electric power points for our electric vehicles and promotion for them. Petrol companies are doing their very best it seems to delay the inevitable. Money talks!

In just two days from now tomorrow will be yesterday.
